Antonio Lobato has finally opened up about the root of Fernando Alonso’s ongoing frustration with him. The Asturian driver never misses an opportunity to take jabs at the “studio,” referring to the F1 commentator on DAZN.
The latest dig came during the Miami GP, where Alonso denied having vibrations from his car and said, “They misinterpreted my radio messages because the studio doesn’t have the full picture.”
In an interview on Senén Morán’s YouTube channel, Lobato admitted that the tension dates back to a heated exchange during the 2023 Azerbaijan GP, Alonso’s first season with Aston Martin.
“It all stems from a maneuver in Baku 2023. He saw it one way, while everyone else—literally EVERYONE—saw it differently. Later, in Barcelona, we met and argued even more. ‘Hard-headed!’ he told me. ‘You’re the hard-headed one,’ I shot back. That was it,” Lobato recounted.
The controversial moment occurred during the Baku sprint race, involving both Alonso and Carlos Sainz.
Lobato also didn’t hold back when criticizing Alonso’s career-defining team choices. “Maybe Alonso is brilliant on the track but terrible at deciding where to go next,” he said. He even labeled Aston Martin’s 2026 project with Adrian Newey and Honda as “Aston Martin, for me, is THE BIGGEST BLUNDER in the HISTORY of Formula 1.”

Regarding Carlos Sainz, Lobato said, “Carlos’s victory at the 2024 Australian GP, fresh from surgery, was EPIC, and it wasn’t properly recognized in Spain. If Alonso had done that or won his 33rd, the country would have gone crazy. That’s unfair. Let’s enjoy both drivers and stop with this petty squabbling.”
