Francis Ngannou is back in the headlines as he gears up for his return to mixed martial arts. The former UFC heavyweight champion is scheduled to fight on May 16 in a major event promoted by Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions. While they now share a business relationship, Ngannou made it clear that respect doesn’t translate to friendship inside the ring or cage.
He remains focused on winning his comeback bout and proving he’s still one of the most dangerous figures in combat sports. The upcoming event has already generated significant buzz, with big names like Ronda Rousey, Gina Carano, and Nate Diaz expected to appear. Ngannou believes this fight card could be the best of the year, but his pointed remarks about Paul have added extra intensity to the buildup, sparking talk of a potential future showdown between the two.

Ngannou admitted his view of Jake Paul has evolved over time. Initially, he saw Paul as just a content creator dabbling in boxing for attention, but now he acknowledges that Paul has earned recognition as a legitimate fighter. Speaking to TMZ, he noted that people now talk about Paul as a real boxer, not just a social media personality trying something new.
However, Ngannou made it clear that respect doesn’t mean fear. He suggested that Paul has been talking too much and questioning his credibility, which didn’t sit well with him. Ngannou expressed that he feels the need to respond physically and prove a point if they ever meet in a fight. He explained that whether the fight happens in boxing or MMA, the result would be the same, and it would be a difficult night for Paul. He also said he doesn’t regret turning down a fight with Paul last year, as he didn’t believe Paul was serious about the matchup at the time.
Earlier, Paul had taken shots at Ngannou with strong words of his own. He dismissed Ngannou’s boxing skills, claiming it would be an easy fight. Paul even compared a potential outcome to Ngannou’s loss against Anthony Joshua, suggesting he could finish him in a similar way. Both fighters have different experiences against Joshua: Ngannou suffered a knockout loss, while Paul managed to last longer before being stopped. As Paul recovers from a jaw injury and plans his return later this year, Ngannou remains focused on his upcoming fight against Philipe Lins.
