Novorizontino climbed the standings in Brazil’s Série B on Sunday, securing a crucial regional derby victory over Botafogo-SP. Playing at Estádio Jorge Ismael de Biasi, the home side edged out a 1-0 win to break into the playoff zone after eight rounds.
After squandering an incredible chance in the first half, Robson redeemed himself by scoring the only goal of the match. The strike propelled Novo Horizonte’s team up five places in the table to sixth position with 12 points. Meanwhile, Ribeirão Preto’s Botafogo extended their winless run to six matches, dropping to 15th place with nine points.
The two Paulista sides will return to action on Saturday, both playing away. Botafogo-SP will travel to Goiânia to face Goiás at Serrinha at 18:30 local time, while later at 20:30, Novorizontino will take on Cuiabá at Arena Pantanal in Cuiabá.
The match started encouragingly, with both teams exchanging passes in attack but lacking creativity in the final third. Despite being the visitors, Botafogo relied heavily on the left flank, particularly through Kelvin, while Novorizontino orchestrated their play through Rômulo.
When the hosts enjoyed a slight edge in possession, Robson missed a golden opportunity one-on-one with goalkeeper Jordan. The first half ended on a melancholic note, marred by numerous misplaced passes and few shots on target.
Novorizontino returned for the second half with greater offensive presence, boosted by the introduction of Carlão. With increased pressure, the goal finally arrived in the 11th minute. Rômulo combined with Vinícius Paiva, who set up Robson to fire firmly into the corner and break the deadlock.
The goal kept the contest open but offered little hope for an entertaining spectacle. Botafogo attempted to fight back but remained far from threatening César’s goal. Satisfied with the lead, Novorizontino patiently circulated the ball, ran down the clock, and managed the victory without scares until the final whistle.
