Michael McGreevy, along with two relievers, delivered a one-hit shutout on Friday night as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals erupted for all their runs in the fifth inning, securing a 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres.

McGreevy (3-2) surrendered only a leadoff single to Jackson Merrill in the fourth inning, along with two walks, while striking out nine over six innings. It marked his second straight shutout performance against an NL West opponent, following a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night.

Griffin Canning (0-1) matched McGreevy early but unraveled in the fifth. Canning allowed seven hits and six runs over 4 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out five.

The game pivoted on a bases-loaded opportunity for each team. San Diego loaded the bases after Merrill’s single, with two-out walks to Gavin Sheets and Fernando Tatis Jr., but McGreevy induced a groundout from Miguel Andujar to escape.

In the fifth, the Cardinals loaded the bases on singles by Masyn Winn and Nathan Church, plus a one-out walk to Victor Scott II. JJ Wetherholt grounded a single to right that scored Winn, and Tatis misplayed the ball, allowing it to roll to the warning track for a three-base error, making it 4-0.

Ivan Herrera added a single—one of his four hits on the night—and Alec Burleson doubled. Jordan Walker walked, and Nolan Gorman greeted reliever Yuki Matsui with an RBI single to right. Winn capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to left.

St. Louis pitchers faced little pressure over the final five innings, retiring the last 16 batters. The Padres managed only five hits in the first two games of the series after collecting 20 in their previous two wins in San Francisco.

Burleson and Church each finished with two hits for the Cardinals, who extended their road winning streak to six games and have won nine of their last 11. The loss was San Diego’s seventh in 10 games.
