Tremble, Dale and Kyoyama? Ulsan Whales’ Transfer Market Opens as KBO Clubs Weigh Asian Quota Changes

KBO League clubs are set to raid the Ulsan Whales roster starting March 20, when the first-ever citizen-founded professional baseball team allows its players to move to any of the 10 KBO franchises. The transfer window covers both domestic and foreign players, sparking intense competition among teams eager to bolster their rosters.

Attention is especially focused on the league’s struggling Asian quota players, introduced for the first time this season. Several underperforming teams are already scouting replacements, with three Japanese-born Ulsan pitchers drawing significant interest.

Okada Akitake (33), a former Nippon Professional Baseball first-team pitcher, has posted a stellar 2.50 ERA (second in the Northern League) with a 3-2 record over seven Futures League games. Naga Taisei (27) boasts a 2.81 ERA (third in the Northern League) and a 3-1 mark in eight appearances, while Kobayashi Jui (25) holds a 3.97 ERA (fifth in the Northern League) with a 2-3 record over eight outings. All three have delivered solid performances that have KBO scouts closely monitoring.

KIA’s Jared Dale, the league’s only Asian quota position player, was demoted to the minors on March 11 after a dismal stretch—hitting just .138 over his last 10 games and committing nine errors in 34 contests. Outside of Hanwha’s Wang Yan-cheng, LG’s Lachlan Wells, and Kiwoom’s Kanakubo Yuto, most Asian quota pitchers have also faltered. Lotte’s Kyoyama Masaya and Doosan’s Tamura Ichiro, both relievers, carry ERAs in the 7-8 range. SSG’s Takeda Shota and NC’s Toda Natsuki, expected to be starters, have combined for a 1-4 record over six starts each, failing to earn their teams’ trust.

Below are the 2026 KBO League Asian quota player statistics so far:

– KIA Dale: 34 games, .256 batting average, .644 OPS, 1 home run, 6 RBIs, 9 errors

– Lotte Kyoyama: 10 games, 10.2 innings, 7.59 ERA, 1 loss, 1 hold

– SSG Takeda: 6 games, 24.1 innings, 8.14 ERA, 1 win, 4 losses

– NC Toda: 6 games, 28 innings, 6.11 ERA, 1 win, 4 losses

Among Ulsan’s domestic players, left-handed pitcher Ko Hyo-joon (43) and center fielder Kim Seo-won (26) have captured attention. Ko, a veteran with 646 KBO appearances, has shown no signs of decline this season, posting a 1.83 ERA with two wins, five holds, and three saves over 18 Futures League games. Kim has impressed with a .347 batting average, .922 OPS, two home runs, 13 RBIs, and eight stolen bases in 19 games.

A maximum of five Ulsan players can transfer to KBO teams, with the transfer fee capped at the player’s annual salary.
